Research

For my end of the year portfolio project, I've decided to do an avant-garde magazine spread, the spring edition. This means I'll have to create costumes, schedule and execute a photo shoot, edit the pictures and design the magazine spread.

To start my project off, I decided to do some background research on existing avant-garde magazines and what fashion photoshoots were like.

Avant-garde fashion magazines have become a trend in recent years in the fashion industry, as more traditional style magazines have begun to lose their appeal. Bored with the formulaic appearance of regular fashion magazines, magazines like Buffalo Zine, Pylot and Is In Town have taken an alternative approach to their issues, from eccentric style choices, heavy emphasis on artistry and the fashion itself, and long, but rare issue releases. In terms of distribution, publications like Buffalo Zine seem to rely on individual online orders to distribute their issues, with no option for subscription, likely due to its abnormal release schedule

In addition to more indie brands, avant-garde fashion can also be found in the pages of Avant-Garde the magazine, W magazine, and other high-end fashion magazines. However, standard fashion can also be found within these publications, which I want to stay away from.

Another important part of my magazine is the photoshoot that I have to conduct prior to being able to put together the magazine. I've decided to hand make all the costumes and do the photo shoot completely on my own (more on that in my planning post) so my shoot won't be as similar to standard fashion industry shoots. Editorial photography focuses on telling a story, with more emphasis on the mood rather than the clothes themselves, in order to properly accompany a written piece. Lighting, composition and careful design are key to creating good editorial pieces.
